The Hospital Coder is responsible for accurately assigning medical codes to diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10 and CPT systems to ensure proper reimbursement. They also assist with charge master maintenance and communicate with physicians to clarify documentation for billing purposes.

Overview RiverView Health, is a community owned, membership based non-profit organization that was formed in 1898 and continues to be the sole community hospital in Crookston, MN.

RiverView Health operates a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital, RiverView Recovery Center; a chemical dependency outpatient treatment program, RiverView Home Care and five primary care and specialty clinics in the hospitals service area.

Responsibilities

Hospital Coder - RHIT, CPC (full-time) Position Status: Non-Exempt – Full-Time (1.0 fte); subject to over-time Location: Hybrid eligible, based on experience and training/orientation Schedule: Monday – Friday Pay Range: $25.69 - $33.24 /per hour (DOE - based on experience/certification status) - benefitted The Hospital Coder is responsible for accurately assigning codes to diagnoses and procedures performed during a patient's hospital stay, utilizing classification systems such as ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT. As a Hospital Coder, you play a vital role in ensuring that every medical service a patient receives during their hospital stay is accurately documented and translated into universal healthcare codes. This role plays a critical part in the healthcare revenue cycle, ensuring proper reimbursement, accurate data for research and public health reporting, and compliance with all coding regulations and guidelines. Duties and Responsibilities

Abstracts pertinent information from patient records. Assigns ICD-9/10 CM or HCPCS codes, for billing (both hospital and clinics) as appropriate. Queries physicians when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes. Assist with bill problem resolution, researches and communicates guidelines for billable services. Assist in the Riverview Health Charge master with applicable coding guidelines and Riverview policies and procedure. Assist in working with clinical directors and helping to implement CDM changes. Assist with hospital and clinic departmental charge masters. Remains current with coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Brings identified concerns to Lead Coder or Director of HIM for resolution. Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association and American Medical Association and adheres to official coding guidelines. Qualifications

Required: Ability to acquire any one of the certifications listed below within 1 year of employment: RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator, or RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician, or CPC - Certified Professional Coder CCA - Certified Coding Associate CCS - Certified Coding Specialist CCS-P - Certified Coding Specialist - Professional Preferred(s): Current certification in any of these areas: RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CCA, CCS, or CCS-P 2+ years previous of coding experience i.e. hospital in/outpatient 2+ years experience with coding, and knowledge of medical records Associate or bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Sciences, or related field Competencies: Collaboration and teamwork, supporting team goals and contributes positively. Coding system proficiency through use of ICD coding platforms. Good communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills. Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to work independently. Adaptability in coding guidelines, software and organizational processes. Manages workload efficiently to meet productivity and quality targets.

Requirements

Candidates must possess or be able to acquire a professional coding certification such as RHIT, CPC, or CCS within one year. A minimum of two years of coding experience and knowledge of medical records is preferred.
