The Clinical Lab Assistant coordinates and conducts all activities of a CLIA-certified laboratory, including performing in-house tests and phlebotomy. They are responsible for maintaining lab inventory, documenting results in the EHR, and ensuring quality control measures are met.
The Clinical Lab Assistant is responsible for coordinating and conducting all activities of a CLIA- certified laboratory to ensure that all patients receive timely and quality service in keeping with best practice and CLIA requirements. The Clinical Lab Assistant works within the context of a primary care medical home, from a team approach, and in continuous partnership with patients, clinical staff members and outside lab services/vendors to provide timely access to laboratory services to all patients of HCHC. Responsibilities Obtains, prepares, and assures timely documentation of results on specimens sent to outside laboratories. Performs in-house, Point of Care lab tests, per protocol and records results in patient chart and reports to provider and pertinent clinical team members. Functions as clinic phlebotomist, with duties including drawing of blood by venipuncture for diagnostic testing and procedures. Appropriately identifies abnormal and critical results and communicates findings to provider and nursing staff. Maintains regular and ongoing inventory of lab supplies and compiles supply order request on monthly or as needed basis. Documents accurate patient information in timely manner in EHR. Assists with training new clinical personnel on lab operations and Point of Care testing. Performs quality control measures on all Point of Care Testing supplies and equipment per manufacturer instructions. The Clinical Lab Assistant tracks all ordered labs and maintains daily accession logs for all labs. Completes tasks as assigned and maintains open and direct communication with manager and all staff. Other responsibilities as assigned. QualificationsRequired Skills and Abilities Culturally effective capabilities demonstrating a sensitivity and responsiveness to varying cultural characteristics and beliefs. The ability to speak, read and write in English is necessary. Must be able to prioritize, have cognitive reasoning, and communicate clearly. Education and Experience At least two years relevant experience, or the equivalent, particularly in the care and service of vulnerable and medically underserved populations. Phlebotomy license preferred. Current CPR (BLS) certificate is required. The employee is preferred to be bilingual. Physical Requirements Hearing must be adequate to perform the essential functions of the job, such as, ability to hear soft voices. This is a moderately active role, which requires the ability to lift or move up to 10 pounds, bending, squatting, sitting and standing as necessary. Must be able to lift, carry and handle equipment, supplies and other work site materials based on position duty requirements. Candidates must have at least two years of relevant experience and a current CPR (BLS) certificate. A phlebotomy license is preferred, and the ability to communicate clearly in English is required.
