About the role

The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the accurate storage, distribution, and preparation of medications, including filling patient drug boxes and floor stock orders. They also assist pharmacists by performing pharmaceutical calculations, maintaining reports, and conducting medication storage area inspections.

Pharmacy Technician Casual Day/Night shift - must be available for the following hours. 7:00 a.m.-7:30 p.m. / 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. / 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Purpose

Responsible for the proper storage and distribution of drugs; receives and accounts for drugs coming from all vendors. Delivers drugs to patient care and other areas; picks up drug returns and applicable paperwork; and puts all returned unit-dose products back to proper receipts. Responsible for filling patient drug boxes, floor stock orders and automated dispensing cabinets. Assists Pharmacists as directed. Maintains daily report.

Responsibilities

Accurately fills floor stock request. Prepare correct labeling for bulk drugs. Perform basic pharmaceutical calculations. Basic understanding of concept of physical stability and chemical stability as it relates to parenteral pharmaceuticals. Correctly interpret physician orders and can distinguish between pharmaceutical orders, laboratory tests, radiology, nursing and other orders. Perform monthly medication storage area inspections. Selects drugs from stock in proper dose, dosage form and quantity as ordered by physician under direct supervision of a pharmacist. Understands microbial contamination and exhibits Aseptic Technique while preparing sterile pharmaceutical products. Repackages drugs into unit of use container.

Education and Formal Training Required

Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required

AND one of the following: Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program Six months of previous pharmacy technician experience Six months experience as a Pharmacy Technician Assistant or Trainee within the UPMC Health SystemEnrollment in an undergraduate pharmacy program and in good standing

Experience

Required: Must be familiar with typewriter keyboard and demonstrate the ability by producing a neat, accurate and legible copy. Individual must have ability to adapt to the computerized Pharmacy Information Systems utilized. I ndividual must demonstrate initiative and good judgment. Previous pharmacy experience preferred, must be registered with the state board of pharmacy as a Registered Pharmacy Technician

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances: PA State Board of Pharmacy Registration required for all PA locations

Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and possess either an accredited pharmacy technician program completion, six months of relevant experience, or current enrollment in an undergraduate pharmacy program. Additionally, registration with the PA State Board of Pharmacy is required.
