About the role

The auditor is responsible for reviewing and ensuring the accuracy and quality of coding assignments for records requiring Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) coding. They collaborate with coding and billing teams to identify discrepancies, recommend corrections, and maintain high coding integrity.

Be a part of a world-class academic health-care system at UChicago Medicine as a OP/ED/OBS Coding Auditor in the HIM Coding/CDI department. This is a remote, work from home opportunity, and you may be based outside of the greater Chicagoland area.

In this role, the OP/ED/OBS Coding Auditor, under general direction, is responsible for reviewing and ensuring the accuracy and quality of coding assignments for all records requiring Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) coding. This role ensures compliance with coding guidelines and standards to support optimal and timely reimbursement and ensure accurate quality reporting. The auditor collaborates with coding and billing teams to identify discrepancies, recommend corrections, and maintain high coding integrity across patient records.

Essential Job Functions

Performs data quality reviews on inpatient and outpatient records to ensure proper coding & charging guidelines have been followed and appropriate DRG or APC assignments have been made by HIM coders.

Provides coding quality information and statistical reports with analysis of trends to Coding Manager.

Communicates and educates Medical Staff as needed to discuss clinical questions with respect to the assignment of ICD-10/CPT codes for diagnoses and/or procedures.

Reviews and drafts Hospitals specific coding guidelines and procedures as needed with management.

Participate in team meetings with coding personnel to discuss coding problems, changes, or issues.

Performs routine coding & abstracting as needed.

Maintains accreditation with AHIMA and abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by AHIMA.

Remains current on all OIG, CMS, and IPPS/OPPS rules, regulations, and coding updates.

Assists coding manager with the development of coder education and quality plan throughout the year.

Responsible, with coding manager, for orientation of newly hired coders and acts as an educational resource for the coding staff.

Required Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited academic body or in lieu of a completed degree; equivalent experience.

Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credentials.

Five (5) years or more of acute care facility coding experience.

Must have skill in prioritizing and performing a variety of duties within a system that has frequently changing assignments, priorities, and deadlines.

Requirements

Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience along with RHIT, RHIA, or CCS credentials. A minimum of five years of acute care facility coding experience and proficiency in Solventum 360 are required.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis.
