California brackets, SDI and the mental health surtax

California runs 9 tax brackets, topping out at 12.3% on the highest incomes. Which bracket you land in depends on taxable income after the state standard deduction, not on gross salary, so the effective state rate on your payslip is always below the headline bracket rate.

Above $1,000,000 of taxable income an additional mental health services tax applies to the excess. It is a surcharge on the amount above the threshold rather than a higher bracket, so it appears as its own line in the breakdown above.

California also withholds State Disability Insurance from every paycheck, which funds disability and paid family leave. It is separate from income tax, and since 2024 it has had no wage ceiling at all — high earners pay it on every dollar, where most state payroll contributions stop at a cap.

No California city or county levies a personal income tax, so the local line stays zero statewide.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about take-home pay in California

On a $75,000 salary, a single filer in California takes home about $57,843 a year, or $2,225 every two weeks. That is an effective tax rate of about 22.88%. Change the salary, filing status and pay frequency in the calculator to see your own figure.

9, running up to 12.3% on the highest incomes, plus an additional mental health services tax on taxable income above $1,000,000. The bracket you land in depends on taxable income after the standard deduction, not on gross salary.

State Disability Insurance. California withholds it from every paycheck to fund disability and paid family leave, and it is separate from state income tax. Since 2024 it has had no wage ceiling, so it applies to every dollar you earn rather than stopping at a cap. It appears as its own row in the breakdown above.

No California city or county levies a personal income tax, so the local line is zero. That makes California simpler than Ohio or New York on the local layer, even though its state brackets are the most complex of the six.

Only if you enter them. Pre-tax retirement contributions and health premiums come out of your pay before income tax is calculated, so including them raises your take-home relative to a plain gross-to-net estimate. Health premiums also reduce Social Security and Medicare, while retirement contributions do not — which is why the two fields are separate.

Each qualifying child is worth a $2,200 federal tax credit. A credit comes off the tax you owe rather than off your taxable income, so it is worth the same amount whatever bracket you are in. It begins phasing out above $200,000 of income, or $400,000 filing jointly. California also reduces its own tax for dependents, on top of the federal credit. Enter the number of children above and every figure updates.

It uses the 2026 federal and state tax tables and standard deductions, so it lands close for a straightforward salaried situation, but your actual paycheck will differ. It covers the federal child tax credit and the main state credits and exemptions, but not credits that depend on a child's age or household income, and it does not model local or municipal income tax, itemised deductions, multi-state work or supplemental wages such as bonuses. It is an estimate rather than tax advice.
