How New York compares
Take-home a year on your salary in the 50 states and DC this calculator covers, highest first.
Excludes local income tax, which lowers take-home in parts of Alabama, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oregon and Pennsylvania.
Living in New York City
New York City residents pay a city income tax on top of state tax. It applies to people who live in one of the five boroughs; commuters who work in the city but live outside it do not pay it. Use the New York City switch in the calculator to include it.
On a $75,000 salary a single filer living in the city pays about $2,472 a year in city tax, on top of state and federal — roughly $95 out of every two-week paycheck. City tax is calculated from New York State taxable income, so state deductions reduce it too.
A New York payslip also carries two small statutory contributions. Paid Family Leave is withheld as a percentage of wages up to an annual cap, and is included in the figures above. State Disability Insurance is capped at a nominal amount per week and employers may absorb it rather than deduct it, so it is left out here — expect at most a few tens of dollars a year.
One limitation worth knowing: above $107,650 of New York income a supplemental tax-benefit recapture claws back the benefit of the lower brackets. It is not modelled here, so estimates above that income understate New York tax.

How accurate is this?
It uses the 2026 federal and state tax tables and standard deductions, so it lands close for a straightforward salaried situation, but your actual paycheck will differ. It covers the federal child tax credit and the main state credits and exemptions, but not credits that depend on a child's age or household income, and it does not model local or municipal income tax, itemised deductions, multi-state work or supplemental wages such as bonuses. It is an estimate rather than tax advice.
