The Surgical Technologist acts as the primary scrub technologist, responsible for preparing, organizing, and managing surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment while strictly maintaining the sterile field integrity throughout procedures. Key duties include setting up the sterile field, assisting the surgeon by passing instruments, performing accurate counts, and cleaning instruments for sterilization.
Candidates must satisfy one of several requirements, including graduating from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program and obtaining certification within 12 months, graduating from an accredited practical nursing school, or qualifying under specific grandfathering or hard-to-fill clauses. The role requires medium physical work involving frequent walking and standing, and a minimum of 15 Continuing Medical Education hours annually.
Maintain a minimum of 15 Continuing Medical Education hours annually. Prepare and check instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures. Set up and maintain a sterile field, following strict aseptic techniques. Assist with patient draping and ensure the surgical team is properly attired. Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures. Perform accurate sponge and sharp counts with the circulating nurse. Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization. Support specialty surgical services and stock OR rooms as needed. Prepare sterile dressings and assist with post-operative care. Help orient new staff and contribute to unit goals and objectives. May handle medications, sharps, and syringes on the sterile field. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet one of the following requirements: Graduated from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited Surgical Technology program and obtain certification through a nationally accredited credentialing organization within 12 months of graduation. Graduated from an accredited school of practical nursing. Qualify under the "Grandfathering Clause" by providing proof of at least one year of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility between December 31, 2010, and December 31, 2014. Qualify under the "Hard-to-Fill Clause" by graduating from an accredited program and obtain certification through a nationally accredited credentialing organization within 24 months of hire. New Graduates: Official transcript from accredited school or letter emailed directly from the school’s registrar’s office confirming program completion will be accepted upon graduation. Primary source education verification required within 90 days of start date. EDUCATION: LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS: PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting. PAY RANGE: $28.05 - $34.17 CITY: Rochester POSTAL CODE: 14621 The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components.
