This position ensures the compliance of radiation therapy equipment with regulatory standards and maintains the Quality Assurance Program for safe and accurate treatment delivery. Responsibilities also include reviewing treatment plans, providing physics consultations to oncologists, and participating in the implementation of new procedures.
Candidates must possess a Master of Science or Master of Arts in medical physics or physics and are encouraged to pursue certification by the American Board of Radiation in Therapeutic Medical Physics. Required abilities include performing complex calibrations, having sound judgment, and strong communication skills for educating staff.
Job Duties Ensure compliance of radiation therapy treatment equipment with regulatory and accreditation agency rules and recommendations Follow the established Quality Assurance Program that ensures a safe and accurate radiation treatment delivery Participate and evaluate the clinical radiation safety program in radiation oncology Participate in the implementation of new procedures for radiation therapy treatment Review the dosimetry component of patients' treatment plans Provide special physics consultation to radiation oncologists Perform acceptance testing and commissioning of equipment used for radiation treatment under the supervision of a qualified medical physicist Perform special physics procedures such as HDR and low dose brachytherapy under the supervision of a qualified medical physicist Perform calibration and quality assurance tests for radiation treatment equipment under the supervision of a qualified medical physicist Perform patient specific QA measurements for IMRT treatment under the supervision of a qualified medical physicist Pursue the certification by the American Board of Radiation in Therapeutic Medical Physics Participate in LEAN events as needed Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
The position requires precise and complex work, accuracy, intellectual curiosity and sound judgment. Must be able to work with a variety of computer equipment and software. Must possess the ability to perform complex calibrations and equipment checks. Must have a sound understanding of radiation safety standards. Must be a good communicator and educator/mentor for staff in the department. Professional Experience Experience in radiation oncology setting preferred. Education Master of Science or Master of Arts in medical physics or physics required. Licensure, Certification, Registration Certification by the American Board of Radiology in therapeutic radiological physics or by the American Board of Medical Physics in radiation oncology physics preferred.
