The specialist promotes consumer recovery through activities like community inclusion and advocacy, while enhancing engagement by providing a welcoming intake experience for new individuals. Direct services may involve outreach in various settings, linkage to community supports, coordination with partners, in-home services, and advocacy.
Candidates must be eligible for Peer Support Specialist certification and obtain it within six months of hiring, be at least 18 years old, and have a primary diagnosis of a mental health condition. A strong personal knowledge derived from first-hand lived experience with a mental health condition causing substantial life disruption is required.
