The Licensed Practical Nurse I functions as a team member under the direction of a registered nurse, performing technical care needs for assigned patients. Key duties include collecting clinical data, performing therapeutic tasks like patient positioning and wound care, collecting specimens, and assisting with admission and discharge processes.
Candidates must be graduates of an accredited practical nursing school and hold a current LPN License in the State of Illinois, along with current CPR certification. ACLS certification is encouraged, becoming required within the first year for critical care and ER roles, and knowledge of patient growth and development needs is essential.
The Licensed Practical Nurse I works as a team member with other ancillary personnel under the direction of the registered professional nurse to meet technical care needs for a specified population of patients.
These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, in accordance with the mission, values and behaviors of Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and guests.
Under the direction of, and in partnership with, the registered professional nurse performs all of the following activities as directed, based on the individual needs of the patient. A. Collects clinical data, reporting any unusual results to the registered professional nurse. 1. TPR, BP, Pain Scale 2. Intake and Output 3. Blood glucose levels 4. Height and weight 5. Post procedure evaluation 6. Performs 12 Lead EKGs as directed in CCU, ER and Telemetry units 7. Documents findings in appropriate areas of chart, including shift and 24-hour intake and output totals as needed
C. Collects specimens as assigned 1. Performs phlebotomy for blood specimen collection 2. Collects urine, stool and sputum specimens as directed 3. Draws blood cultures and type/cross match for blood administration
E. Ensures that care is provided for all patients utilizing the attributes of Careful Nursing. 1. Trustworthy collaboration 2. Health education 3. Perfect skill in fostering safety and comfort 4. Participatory – authoritative management
