The technician is responsible for the entire lifecycle of instruments and supplies, including transportation, decontamination, cleaning, processing, storage, distribution, and sterilization, while strictly following infection control practices. This role requires adherence to standards set by The Joint Commission, OSHA, and other agencies to prevent cross-contamination and ensure a safe hospital environment.
A minimum of six months of experience as a Sterile Processing Department Technician is preferred, along with thorough knowledge of medical terminology, aseptic techniques, and instrument nomenclature. Certification from IAHCSMM or CBSPD is required within the first twelve months of employment.
Overview The Technician, under minimal supervision, is responsible for transporting, decontamination, cleaning processing, storage and distribution, and sterilization of instruments, supplies equipment dispensed by the department following infection control practices. Must be conscientious with regard to procedures and capable of working under pressure and interacting professionally with other departments within the hospital. Responsible for adherence to standards and regulations enforced by The Joint Commission, OSHA, and other government agencies, to prevent cross-contamination and maintain a safe hospital environment.
Education/Training/Experience Minimum of 6 months experience as Sterile Processing Department Technician preferred. Thorough knowledge of medical terminology, aseptic techniques, and nomenclature of instruments and equipment used by the department. Knowledgeable with cleaning and sterilization procedures and techniques. Conscientious regard for technical procedures and accuracy. Good communication skills, both verbally and in writing. Licenses/Certifications IAHCSMM or CBSPD technician certification required within the first twelve (12) months.
