The RN/First Assist works in the perioperative setting to assist the surgeon in performing safe operations. They are responsible for assessing patients pre-operatively and developing nursing care plans based on assessments.

Job Summary

Works in the perioperative setting to carry out functions to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.

Qualifications

  • Education Same as primary job description
  • Training Same as primary job description
  • Experience Same as primary job description Preferred one year experience in PACU, ER, ICU, CCU or other related field
  • 100% on-site position
  • Rotating call schedule for surgical department.
  • Vaccinations per IDPH, CDC, and CMS.

Essential Functions

  • Knowledgeable and competent of basic sciences
  • Knowledgeable and competent of assessment techniques
  • Knowledgeable and competent of procedures, principles, and management of pre-operative and post-operative care of surgical patients
  • Knowledgeable of professional practice advocacy, accountability, credentialing, liability and regulatory guidelines
  • Notifies physician and/or anesthetist of any pertinent physical or emotional findings
  • Assesses the patient pre-operatively and develops a nursing care plan based on the assessment
  • Assists in transporting the patient pre and post-operatively as needed
  • Communicates information to the nursing staff and to the patient’s family as appropriate
  • Assures readiness in room, including clean floors, furniture, equipment; supplies ready and in order; cabinets stocked; routine equipment is ready and checked for proper functioning; special equipment ready
  • Assures appropriate safe mode of transportation to the OR
  • Check for appropriate pre-op requisites on patient’s chart and takes necessary steps for missing reports
  • Observe OR team for application of dress code
  • Assist anesthetist as necessary
  • Proper prep according to procedure performed
  • Assist in Perioperative area, up to and including licensure threshold
  • Properly manages acute or emergent conditions, under the direction of a physician
  • Will take initiative, during downtime, to complete daily tasks
  • Is competent in emergency and critical care equipment and devices
  • Job Knowledge ࣿ ࣿSame as primary job description General surgical care, aseptic technique, and Universal precautions ACLS and PALS or ENPC Computer literacy Knowledge of/demonstrates competency in caring for all ages, neonates, infants, children, adult, geriatrics Same Day Surgery RN

Requirements
