The role involves performing clinical laboratory tests of moderate complexity, including specimen preparation, microscopic examinations, and bacterial culture analysis. Additionally, the technician is responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, calibrating instruments, and ensuring accurate reporting of test results.
Candidates must possess an Associate’s Degree in chemistry, biology, or a related field, or equivalent practical laboratory experience. A minimum of six to twelve months of related on-the-job laboratory experience is required.
SUMMARY Under general supervision, works alongside Medical Technologists and/or Pathology Supervisors, who are available to advise on unusual situations, to perform clinical laboratory tests of moderate complexity that require professional training. This role is differentiated from that of a Technologist by the level of independent judgment exercised, the complexity of testing performed, and overall responsibility. In addition, all employees are expected to demonstrate the organization’s Core Success Factors, which define how we work together and achieve our goals: Instill Trust and Value Differences Patient and Community Focus Collaborate RESPONSIBILITIES Prepare solutions and reagents and determine their suitability using standard laboratory formulas Set up and read routine blood and urine cultures to detect pathogenic bacteria and determine organism susceptibility to antibiotics Perform routine clinical and microscopic examinations on urine, stool, and other specimens Prepare specimens for testing procedures, including cutting sections, staining, smearing, labeling, and logging Set up laboratory instruments by replenishing reagents, calibrating equipment, and running specimens on automated systems Draw patient blood samples following established procedures and transport specimens to the laboratory Log specimens received and maintain accurate records of all tests performed Review test results to ensure accuracy and compliance with established quality control parameters Report results to authorized personnel in a timely manner Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, instruments, glassware, and work areas Perform other related duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education / Basic Knowledge Associate’s Degree in chemistry, biology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in a laboratory environment Ability to operate laboratory equipment and instruments and to perform and interpret assigned procedures and tests Physical and visual dexterity required to conduct and interpret laboratory tests Knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns Experience Six (6) to twelve (12) months of related on-the-job laboratory experience required WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Exposure to odors, infectious materials, toxins, and other hazardous substances Visual strain associated with microscopic work Required to stand for extended periods and lift/carry laboratory supplies and equipment SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY None Pay Range: $22.24-$23.25 Brown University Health is committed to providing equal employment opportunities and maintaining a work environment free from all forms of unlawful discrimination and harassment.
