The Sonographer III performs specialized cardiovascular and radiologic imaging procedures to assist medical staff in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. They also provide clinical mentorship, maintain equipment quality standards, and ensure accurate documentation of study findings.
Candidates must be graduates of an accredited Radiography program and possess 3-5 years of experience in diagnostic medical or cardiovascular sonography. Current ARDMS, ARRT, or CCI credentials and Basic Life Support certification are required.

General Description: The Sonographer II is an experienced sonographer who provides specialized imaging services to OU Health patients to aid Providers in the diagnosis, care, treatment and surveillance of simple to complex conditions, defects and/or diseases. This position is intended for experienced Sonographers who are able to independently provide exceptional patient care while working towards expertise in the discipline. Work may be performed in an outpatient or inpatient environment across OU Health locations. Essential Responsibilities: Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Utilizes advanced skill set and knowledge to perform diagnostic imaging on patient as ordered by a care provider under limited supervision. Ensures testing is performed safely and with the highest quality standards, maintaining a consistent focus on patient‑centric care. Prepares patients for procedures and reviews clinical history to align with provider-ordered tests. Responds to inquiries from patients and family members, provides clear information regarding diagnostic testing and expected result timelines. Collaborates with team members across OU Health including Providers to provide exceptional patient care. Utilizes a variety of highly specialized imaging and ultrasound equipment and techniques to perform a diverse range of diagnostic imaging in accordance with established scope of practice guidelines. Conducts post-testing quality reviews without assistance to confirm that all required elements are completed, documented and align with departmental and accreditation standards. Transfers images and data to the appropriate electronic health system, enters technical data/findings and prepares study for reporting by physician. Performs quality control checks, cleaning, disinfecting and other equipment maintenance tasks per manufacturer instructions for use and other regulatory guidelines. Ensures that technical quality of performed testing meets established protocols and applicable accreditation standards. Serves as a departmental preceptor to provide instruction and mentorship to new or less experienced team members. Assists with onboarding of new team members. Supports OU Health's academic partnerships by actively engaging in teaching of students in the radiologic program. Assists with quality assurance and performance improvement tasks as assigned. Demonstrates advanced knowledge by preparing and presenting in-service trainings as requested by leadership. May administer contrast per protocol. Ensures timely patient care by providing adequate time slots for daily appointments and working at a pace that supports the daily schedule. Provides On-Call clinical coverage outside regularly scheduled duty hours on weekdays, weekends and holidays as assigned. May Contribute to the development of policies, procedures and quality assurance methods. General Responsibilities: Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Associate's Degree from an accredited sonography or imaging/radiology program as defined by ARDMS, ARRT and/or CCI.
Demonstrates advanced knowledge and skill in applying principles of radiologic technology, medical imaging, positioning of patients and medical ethics. Applies advanced knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology related to sonography and radiologic technologies associated with imaging specialty credentialed to perform. Demonstrates advanced ability and skill to apply theory, practices and techniques to perform, post-process, analyze and annotate study data or procedure documentation independently. Excellent verbal and written communication skills Demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and patient populations served Demonstrates strong knowledge of and ability to apply HIPAA guidelines and standards. Ability to prioritize and complete clinical or non-clinical work assignments Ability to multi-task and remain calm in stressful situations Strong ability to work as part of a diverse team and communicate effectively with others. Displays consistency and dependability by reporting to work as scheduled. Strong ability to be sensitive to patients’ physical and psychological needs.
