About the role

The CRNA administers various types of anesthesia for surgical and invasive procedures while monitoring patient vital signs and physical status. They also maintain anesthesia equipment, document patient care records, and provide on-call support for emergency, obstetrical, and surgical needs.

Direct Hire, 0.8 to 1.0 FTE, 64 to 80 hours Bi-Weekly Winona Health operates a surgery department with hours of operation primarily during day time hours but due to the uncertainty of surgical cases, those hours will vary day-to-day. On-Call is required on a rotating basis. Must be available for on-call duty in 30 minutes or less.

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) administers intravenous, inhalation, and other anesthetics to patients undergoing invasive and surgical procedures. In addition, the CRNA monitors patient’s vital signs in a manner consistent with current standards, maintains anesthesia equipment to insure proper functioning, and maintains records of each anesthetic administered. The CRNA functions as a resource person in controlling pain (postop; labor, etc.) and also functions as a team member in various departments and care settings.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Administers sedation, intravenous, inhalation and regional anesthetic for surgical and invasive procedures, deliveries, other medical and dental procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge of anesthetic medications as necessary relating to patient’s condition during surgery and invasive procedures.
  • Monitors vital signs, observes for significant physical changes, and keeps the surgeon, other appropriate providers and the surgical team informed of the patient’s condition.
  • Prepares prescribed solutions for intravenous and/or arterial administration. Administers pre-operative medications prescribed by the physician if not already given.
  • Assesses fluid needs of patients and administers fluids accordingly as well as administers and monitors blood and blood product transfusions.
  • Assists with positioning the patient on the operating room bed according to established procedure for type of operation to be performed and assists in moving patient from the OR, PAA/PACU, and/or department providing the next phase of care.
  • Is constantly vigilant to the safety needs of patients, taking necessary precautions as warranted.
  • Is available for emergency room consults, obstetrical and surgical on-call needs.
  • Maintains a pre- and post-operative clinical report on the patient’s condition, by maintaining an anesthetic record for each patient. Documents patient’s medications, consciousness, respiratory status, circulation, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and activity status. Records condition of the patient prior to, during and following administration of anesthetic.
  • Maintains equipment necessary for use during anesthesia. Assembles and tests devices to ensure proper functioning. Disassembles after use and cleans work area. Requisitions necessary repairs or adjustments to equipment. Reports malfunctioning equipment promptly and removes from the patient care area to maintain a safe environment.
  • Assists in maintaining an adequate stock of anesthetics, supplies, and accessories. Works collaboratively with pharmacy personnel to assure adequate stock of needed anesthetics.
  • Practices safe site surgery techniques including but not limited to time out standard work and stops the line when safety issues or concerns with patient care occur.
  • Keeps current on ASA guidelines, theory, research, medication and legal issues related to patient care services.
  • Conforms to the Nurse Practice Act.

Skills and Experience

Required

4-year nursing degree. Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing and from an accredited School of Nurse Anesthesiology.

RN License - MN. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) licensure.

BLS, ACLS, PALS, and Neonatal Resuscitation.

Has completed training on all equipment used in the clinical area.

Basic computer skills. Patient information database (Cerner, EMR).

Required Competencies

This position is a direct care provider and requires the ability to give adequate care to patients/residents in the following age groups:

Infant (Birth to 1 Year) Child (2-12) Adolescent (13-17) Adult (18-65) Geriatric (65 and over)

Physical Demands: Medium to Heavy Work

Medium Work

Work activities that require lifting frequently with 25#, occasionally 25-40# and rarely 50#. Work activities that require push/pull forces of with 50# frequently and 100# rarely Medium work activities generally exceed those for light work. Work activities may assume work in a variety of work positions including frequent bending and stooping, frequently squatting, frequent standing and walking. Medium work includes most roles within Winona Health that requires patient handling activities of transfers, rolling, and positioning.

Physical Requirements

May lift objects up to 50# rarely, 30-45# occasionally and frequently 10-30# May push/pull carts or equipment up to 50# of force frequently and rarely up to 100# May push/pull wheelchairs with 30-50# of force with handle height = 36” May require moderate to firm gripping or pinching. May use hand tools May reach frequently 7-36”, occasionally 6-80”.

Heavy Work

Work activities that require lifting 35-50# frequently and occasionally 50-100# and 100# rarely. Work activities that require push/pull forces with 100# frequently and 200# rarely. Heavy work activities generally exceed the physical demands for the medium category of work activities. Physical Requirements: May lift frequently up to 50# and rarely 100# May complete patient/resident handling moving or positioning with situations that safe patient handling equipment is not available.

Work Environment

This is a fast-paced clinical environment with multitasking, prioritizing and frequent interruptions. Continuous communication is required with staff, volunteers and the general public. Multi-tasking ability required due to the wide variety of assigned duties.
