The surgical technologist facilitates safe and effective invasive surgical procedures by maintaining a sterile environment and ensuring equipment functions properly. They work under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses to assist during operations and manage surgical tools.
Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and be a graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology. A current Surgical Tech Certification is required, along with the ability to perform physical tasks like lifting up to 100 lbs.

Classification: Non Exempt
The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician' performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
High School Diploma or GED required. Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program.
Previous Surgical Technologist experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.
Current Surgical Tech Certification required, or if employed prior to July 1, 2021, registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine required.
Ability to create and maintain a sterile field. Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Basic understanding of medical terminology. Computer skills.
