The Breast Surgical Nurse Navigator acts as the primary point of contact for patients, physicians, and caregivers to coordinate all aspects of breast cancer care. Responsibilities include providing patient education, managing surgical scheduling, and coordinating follow-up care with multidisciplinary providers.
Candidates must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a current New Jersey RN license and BLS certification. A BSN degree and 2 years of experience in Oncology or Breast Health are preferred, along with specific Breast Navigator or OCN certifications.
The Breast Surgical Nurse Navigator serves as a single point of contact at a breast surgical oncology practice for physicians, patients, and caregivers. The Breast Navigator is responsible for coordinating all aspects of patient care and provides guidance and information throughout the experience with compassion to achieve optimal quality of care outcomes. This position will be located at our new location in the greater Princeton area. Responsibilities include but not limited to: Provide education for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients navigating them throughout the procedural and post operative phase of care. Participates in the evaluation and development of patient education materials and provides individualized teaching based on needs of the patients. Uses the nursing process, to provide comprehensive nursing care, support and education to patients and their families during screening, diagnostic tests, treatment, recovery, and rehabilitation. Provides teaching for patients to prepare them for surgery and minimize complications. Ensures that the patient attends their scheduled procedures and that they have all pertinent information regarding the procedure date, time, and pre/peri/post-operative instructions. Recognize and prevent complications to reduce hospitalization. Provides triage for all post biopsy and surgical breast center patients and ensures timely referrals for follow up care to address complex needs. Coordinate care for hospital discharged patients & breast oncology patients. Interact with numerous breast oncology patients to provide specialized coordinated care. Review daily schedules for new patients; schedule meet and greets with all newly diagnosed breast cancer patients; ensure completion of required documentation and information. Provide collaborative coordination to referring providers such as plastic surgery, Radiation, and Medical Oncology ensuring that they have schedule appointments and they have followed up accordingly. Act as liaison with clinical and administrative staff as well as other practices to ensure the upmost quality of care. Review physicians Inbox sections as needed & daily ensuring all tasks are addressed. Assess any urgent/critical issues/messages that need to be communicated to MD and contact patients to obtain pertinent information, as needed. Obtain records from other facilities including lab results, previous radiology, consults, etc. Follow up on pathology results. Assist with scheduling radiology tests for patients; follow up with patients to ensure testing was completed. Follow long term DCIS patients; ensuring they attend all recommended follow up appointments, mammograms etc. Assist in various quality improvement projects (subject to needs of the practice).
Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree preferred Licensure: Current licensure as a registered nurse (RN) in New Jersey Experience: 2 years of experience in Oncology, Breast Health, or Surgical experience preferred Certification: BLS certification required; Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), Holds Breast Navigator Certification or OCN Certification OR Successful completion of Breast Patient Navigator certificate as administered by the National Consortium of Breast Centers within 6 months of hire.
