The Certified Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing and maintaining the sterile field and surgical instruments for operative procedures. They assist the surgical team throughout all phases of surgery and ensure a safe, sterile environment.
Candidates must be graduates of an accredited surgical technology program with 1-3 years of experience in a fast-paced surgical environment. Required certifications include CST or TS-C and BLS, along with a valid driver's license.
Prepare sterile supplies and instruments using sterile technique. Set up the sterile field and ensure surgical equipment is functioning properly. Assist in positioning and prepping patients as needed for surgery. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team based on knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology and how they relate to the surgical patient and procedure. Pass supplies, equipment, and instruments during procedures. Assist with suction, suture preparation, irrigation, medication transfer (not administration), specimen handling, and retraction. Apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, connect drains to suction apparatus, and apply dressings to closed wounds. Assist in sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating RN before, during, and after the procedure. Perform intraoperative activation of power equipment under the authority of the physician. Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization. Participate in room turnover and preparation for subsequent cases. Serve as a resource to peers and assist in onboarding and training of new staff. Maintain current knowledge through continuing education and best practices in surgical technology. Collaborate with surgical team to support patient safety and operational efficiency. Adhere to infection control protocols and hospital policies to ensure patient and staff safety. Maintain effective communication with the surgical team and demonstrate professionalism in high-pressure situations. Perform additional responsibilities as delegated to support surgical team operations and patient care. Qualifications Education & Training: Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program (CAAHEP or ABHES preferred).
