REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT: KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A working knowledge of standard laboratory instruments and equipment and the techniques and procedures concerning their use; a working knowledge of the basic theories, principles, and practices of clinical laboratory science; a working knowledge of the literature and current developments in the field of clinical laboratory science; the ability to exercise judgement in preparing specimens for testing, determining appropriate test procedures, and interpreting test results; the ability to perform clinical laboratory science tests with a high degree of accuracy and precision; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers; the ability to prepare clear and concise reports; and related capacities and abilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: Graduation from a college of recognized standing with a Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, or related science.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must meet the standards for qualification of personnel who perform clinical laboratory tests as required by RIGL 23-16.2-6.
Supplemental Information Responsibilities of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) position within the Special Pathogens and Biothreats Laboratory will include clinical and environmental testing and analysis for biothreat agents, the processing and testing of specimens for infectious disease causing bacteria, including tuberculosis, as well as other duties.
The CLS will be required to perform testing using biological safety cabinets and sometimes under biological safety level 3 conditions.
Other related duties include performing quality control and preventative maintenance on media and instrumentation as well as packaging and shipping various infectious substances.
Once trained, the CLS will be part of the biothreat agent on-call response.
