The role of an X-ray Technician involves operating X-ray equipment to perform diagnostic imaging procedures on patients under the direction of healthcare providers. The primary responsibility is to ensure accurate and high-quality imaging while prioritizing patient safety and comfort. Key duties include preparing and positioning patients for imaging, operating, and maintaining X-ray equipment, adhering to radiation safety protocols, evaluating image quality, and collaborating with healthcare professionals to provide timely diagnostic information. The X-ray Technician plays a vital role in the healthcare team by contributing to accurate diagnoses and treatment plans for patients.
Essential Job Duties

- Perform X-ray imaging procedures on patients as prescribed by physicians.
- Prepare and position patients for imaging, ensuring their safety and comfort during the procedure.
- Operate and maintain X-ray equipment, including calibration and quality control checks.
- Follow established protocols and safety guidelines to minimize radiation exposure to patients and staff.
- Evaluate images for quality and accuracy, ensuring proper documentation and reporting of results.
- Collaborate with radiologists and other healthcare professionals to provide timely and accurate diagnostic information.
- Maintain patient records and ensure confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Assist in training and mentoring new staff members as needed.
Required education and experience
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required.
Minimum Education required
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate degree in radiologic technology or related field preferred.
- Current certification as a Radiologic Technologist (RT) by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or equivalent certification.
- State licensure as required by regulations.
Minimum Experience Required
- Prior experience as an X-ray Technician.
- Strong technical skills and knowledge of X-ray equipment and procedures.
Minimum Knowledge and Skills Required
- Knowledge of radiation safety protocols and practices to minimize exposure risks to patients, staff, and oneself.
- Ability to provide compassionate care to patients during imaging procedures, including addressing their concerns and ensuring their comfort and safety.
- Proficiency in using medical imaging software to capture, store, and analyze X-ray images, as well as to generate reports for healthcare providers.
- Skills in conducting quality assurance checks on X-ray equipment and images to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with patients, healthcare professionals, and support staff.
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and technical issues during imaging procedures.
- Thoroughness in positioning patients correctly, adjusting equipment settings, and reviewing images for quality and diagnostic accuracy.
- Collaboration with radiologists, physicians, and other healthcare team members to coordinate patient care and provide accurate diagnostic information.
- Flexibility to handle varying workloads, schedule changes, and emergent situations in a healthcare setting.
- Proficient in documenting patient information, imaging procedures, and results accurately and in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
