The Behavioral Specialist-Intern will provide psychological assessment and treatment services to an inpatient adult population under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. Responsibilities include conducting clinical interviews, facilitating treatment groups, and providing individual therapy.
Candidates must have a master's degree in counseling or psychology from an accredited institution. Additionally, applicants must be enrolled in an APA accredited doctoral psychology program and have completed all required coursework.

Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders. Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) is a 613-bed, licensed mental health treatment facility that provides person-centered services to adults suffering from severe and persistent mental illness. The hospital, located in Macclenny, was established in 1959 and is the largest state operated civil treatment facility. NORTHEAST FLORIDA STATE HOSPITAL IS A TOBACCO FREE FACILITY. This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as a Behavioral Specialist-Intern at the Northeast Florida State Hospital. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented. This is work providing psychological assessment and treatment services to an inpatient adult population at Northeast Florida State Hospital as a doctoral psychology intern under constant clinical supervision of a licensed psychologist. All work is supervised by a licensed psychologist to include routine psychological hospital assessments, violence risk assessments, suicide risk assessments, forensic evaluations, and psychological testing (e.g., memory testing, personality testing, and intelligence testing). The candidate for this position has already been selected through the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Center’ National Match Program, which is a requirement for American Psychological Association accredited doctoral psychology internship programs. This process involved internship applicants submitting documentation of current enrollment in a clinical or counseling psychology APA accredited doctoral academic program with all coursework complete with the exception of dissertation or research requirements, documentation of number of hours of supervised clinical experience, completion of all practicum experiences required by the applicant’s academic program, four essays, and remote interviews with two licensed psychologists or doctoral level psychology clinicians employed at Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH). Eligible applicants were ranked and on February 21, 2026, the National Match Services informed NEFSH which ranked applicants would fill our three intern positions for the 2026-2027 training year.
