Job description

General summary

Under general supervision, performs a variety of medical assisting duties such as; preparing patients for examinations; obtaining medical histories and vital signs, maintaining and organizing exam rooms including stocking of supplies; assisting physician or provider with examinations or surgeries; performing diagnostic tests and studies. Acts as an assistant to the physician or provider in patient care management. Responsible for maintaining confidentiality of patient information. Assignments involve judgment based on knowledge gained through a medical assistant training program or LPN program, and experience.

Supervision received

Works under the direct supervision of the office coordinator or designee for daily operations.

Responsibilities: And duties:

  • 1.
  • Follows directions and instructions of physician or provider as it relates to patient care management.
  • 2.
  • Responsible for the management of patient flow; escorts patients to exam rooms, ensures patients are prepared for exams.
  • 3.
  • Responsible for cleanliness and orderliness of exam and procedure rooms according to OSHA guidelines.
  • Ensures necessary supplies and instruments are appropriately stocked in exam rooms.
  • 4.
  • Ensures patient’s medical record is complete prior to appointment time by reviewing the record to confirm tests, studies and consult reports were obtained.
  • 5.
  • Prepares patients for examinations and surgeries by taking vital signs, according to office protocol and documents findings in the medical record.
  • Documents other patient medical information as directed by physician.
  • Requests patient drape for exams according to protocol outlined by provider.
  • 6.
  • Assists with diagnostic procedures, treatments, examinations.
  • Performs diagnostic procedures, treatments, injections and immunizations, and venipuncture according to protocol outlined by the physician or provider.
  • 7.
  • Handles and/or refers patient inquiries to physician or provider according to instructions, verbal or written.
  • 8.
  • Obtains pharmacy information and upon physician/provider approval, contacts pharmacy to place orders for prescriptions.
  • 9.
  • Responsible for making appointments for diagnostic tests, studies, consults, surgical boarding and scheduling of pre admission testing per the direction of physician or provider.

  • Physical demand and working conditions

    • 1.
    • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
    • 2.
    • Work is of medium/heavy demand and requires walking and standing for long periods of time.
    • 3.
    • Occasionally lifts and carries heavy items.
    • 4.
    • Talking and hearing for receiving patients, making and canceling appointments, and communicating with office staff.
    • 5.
    • Requires normal visual acuity.
    • 6.
    • Requires exposure to bodily fluids, and ionizing radiation.
    • 7.
    • Contact involves dealing with sick people.

    Minimum entrance requirements

    Education and/or Work Experience

    No experience required. Must have graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant educational program. Five years of experience as a medical assistant may replace educational requirement. Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain within 2 months of employment and maintain throughout employment.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of medical practice patient care.

    Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.

    Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.

    Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and medications as directed.

    Skill in taking vital signs.

    Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.

    Ability to establish and maintain rapport with patients, physicians, stag manager and contacts external to the practice.
