The Ophthalmic Technician performs ocular examinations, testing, and patient triage while overseeing clinic operations and instrumentation. They are responsible for maintaining compliance with health regulations and managing clinic inventory and patient flow.
Requires a high school diploma and one year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician, though education may substitute for experience. Candidates must obtain COA certification within 18 months and maintain current CPR certification.
Under broad guidelines with a high level of independence, we are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician who will oversee technicians and also perform ocular examinations and testing.
Regularly checks Wilmer’s procedure room to ensure that everything therein is compliant with Johns Hopkins Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control requirements as well as requirements of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Joint Commission. Ensures all instrumentation is properly cleaned, sterilized, stored, and ready for use. Works with insurance companies, who often withhold approval, to provide documentation demonstrating the medical necessity of treatment, surgery, and/or medication/s for patients. Ensures in-basket messages from patients directed to any of Wilmer’s Oculoplastics locations are reviewed, addressed and acted on timely. Triages in-basket messages and escalates those that require physician attention and involvement. Implements, measures and adjusts improvement initiatives. Serves as the primary resource for questions/issues of staff and patients. Orients new physicians, fellows and residents to clinic processes. Manages clinic inventory and orders medications, instruments and supplies as needed. Ensures all dated items are reviewed and expiration times are never exceeded. Continuously monitors patient flow and intervenes to mitigate backups.
Obtain and concisely record an accurate patient history. Chief complaint Past ocular, medical, family and social history Medications and allergies
Patient services Properly assist physically or visually disabled patients. Apply proper ocular dressings and shields. Follow divisional protocols for eye drop instillation, including cycloplegics and topical anesthetics.
Basic Tonometry Perform accurate applanation tonometry using the Goldmann or Tonopen tonometer. Perform accurate iCare tonometry. Understand the principals of scleral rigidity and the factors that alter intraocular pressure.
Instrument Maintenance Perform routine instrument maintenance on all ophthalmic equipment. Stock examination rooms in assigned area and ensure medication expiration dates are current. Disinfect and maintain examination rooms. Proficient in software such as Epic and Forum.
General Medical Knowledge Maintain current CPR certification
High School Diploma or graduation equivalent One year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician. Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Asst (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date. CPR certification also required. Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Familiarity with ophthalmic and general medical terminology.
able to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, addition and subtraction of positive and negative numbers.
able to comprehend simple instructions and short correspondence. Able to write simple correspondence. Able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to patients and other employees.
