Job description

Job summary

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, the Licensed Vocational Nurse works in collaboration with the clinical team in delivering high-quality care to patients in the Allergy, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases Clinics. The type of patients treated in the clinic include patients who are receiving allergy immunotherapy services.

  • The Licensed Vocational Nurse is responsible for providing nursing care to patients in the ambulatory setting.
  • All components of nursing care will be individualized to meet the patient’s physiological and psychosocial developmental level and needs.
  • Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required by patient need.
  • Works collaboratively with RN as a nursing resource for staff and provides nursing supervision that is within the scope of practice in the absence of the RN.
  • The LVN triages patient phone calls and messages, directing assessment need calls to RN or MD.
  • The Licensed Vocational Nurse supports the clinical team that consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, medical assistants, and program coordinators.

Department Overview

The Allergy and Immunologic (AI) Clinic evaluates and treats patients with a variety of allergic conditions which include: asthma, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, rashes, food allergy, drug hypersensitivity, and bee sting allergy.

AI also cares for patients with

immune deficiencies, frequent infections, and inflammatory diseases of other types. Complete skin testing and injection therapy for allergies are available

  • The UCSF Infectious Diseases Clinic offers evaluation and treatment for a wide range of infectious diseases, with a focus on complex or unusual conditions. We often care for patients with the following concerns:
  • Recurrent infections of the skin or other soft tissue (supportive tissues such as muscles and fat)
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Recurrent herpes virus infections
  • Mycobacterial infections of the lungs and skin
  • Coccidioidomycosis, or valley fever, a type of fungal infection

    Duties: & essential job functions

    • General duties and responsibilities include clinical and administrative functions.
    • Supports the nursing duties and follows the nursing process.
    • Clinical duties include managing patient flow, obtaining vital signs, review health maintenance status, immunizations, monitoring and maintaining exam room supplies, enter and review patient information in the electronic medical record (Apex) as appropriate and assist with emergencies as outlined in the department Emergency Manual.
    • The Licensed Vocational Nurse supports administrative functions as required that includes but not limited to patient registration, verifying patient health insurance, appointment scheduling, telephone reception, insurance authorization management, new patient coordination, and copay collection.
    • Demonstrate outstanding customer service skills with patients and staff.
    • The License Vocational Nurse must be proficient with the use of electronic medical record system.
    • The License Vocational Nurse must comply with all organizational policies pertaining to HIPPA and the safeguard of all patient health information.
    • The Licensed Vocational Nurse must comply with organizational nursing policies and state laws pertaining to scope of practice and adheres to professional standards as a licensed nurse.
    • Adheres to Infection Control and Safety policies at all times.
    • Must maintain current licensure at all times and complete all required initial and annual trainings.
    • Notifies the Administrative Nurse and clinical team of problems in the clinic.
