About the role

Provide administrative and technical support to Cytology and Pathology Laboratories, acting as a liaison between the department and other hospital units. Perform pre and post-analytical duties including sample processing, data entry into LIS, and preparation of pathology slides.

Cabell Huntington Hospital seeks a full-time Laboratory Support Clerk.

The purpose of this position is to provide administrative support to the Cytology and Pathology Laboratories. Act as a liaison between the department and all other hospital units, physicians, outside accounts and the public. To perform pre and post analytical duties for laboratory testing and provide associated support services.

Job specific accountabilities (full-list available in job description)

Interprets physicians' orders and enters data into the LIS system.

Receives and processes samples delivered from internal and external sources. Delivers samples to the various laboratory sections.

Distributes completed Laboratory/Pathology reports to nursing units, physicians' boxes and other areas of the hospital.

Sorts and prepares, for mailing, all reports being sent to physicians’ offices. Maintains current addresses to ensure timely delivery of reports.

Receives incoming calls for the laboratory and assists the caller as appropriate or transfers these calls to the correct laboratory section or person.

Utilizes laboratory computer programs for the entry of orders, receipt of specimens and query of results.

Maintains proficiency in the use of the HIS specimen registration process to establish patient accounts.

Provides courier service and/or specimen pickup and supply delivery for external clients. Creates orders for specimens, properly places the labels on the specimens and delivers them to the lab sections for testing.

Monitors results call list to ensure that all results are called or faxed as necessary to facilitate timely reporting.

Prepares Pap smear slides and monolayer slides to include staining, cover slipping, and reagent preparation Performs maintenance on instruments in these areas as needed.

Transports specimens from Surgery.

Is able to accession specimens and accurately enter clinical information from the requisitions into the pathology module.

Prepares cases for send out of surgical consultations.

Provides clerical support for Pathologists and Laboratory Administration.

Processes specimens to be sent to reference laboratories. Is familiar with the proper packaging, specimen requirements, sample preparation, and creation of the manifest to be forwarded with the specimens.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with classes in advanced sciences (Chemistry, Physics, and Biology II)
  • Junior College/Technical School (Medical Assistant, Clinical Laboratory Assistant or Multi-skilled laboratory Technician certification)
  • Valid Driver's license, acceptable driving record, dependable mode of transportation, valid registration and insurance
  • Minimum 35 words per minute typing speed, after mistakes removed (testing will take place in Human Resources)
  • 75% score on the Medical Terminology Exam
  • Demonstrated computer skilled in a windows based environment and high degree of communication skills required
  • At minimum, one year of experience assisting pathologists, cytotechnologists and histologists, preparing pap smear slides and monolayer slides to include staining cover slipping and reagent preparation, preparing cases for surgical consultation

Requirements

Requires a high school diploma with advanced science classes and a technical certification in medical or laboratory assistance. Candidates must have at least one year of experience assisting pathologists and possess a valid driver's license and specific typing and medical terminology scores.
