Overview Medical Assistant - Mohs Surgery We're hiring a Surgical Medical Assistant to join our dermatology practice, Academic Alliance in Dermatology, in Tampa, Florida. In this role, you'll provide hands-on surgical support to our Mohs surgeon and patients during surgical procedures.
As a Surgical Medical Assistant you will play a critical role in supporting our dermatology surgical team by providing hands-on patient care in a fast-paced clinical setting. This position involves assisting with Mohs surgery, preparing surgical rooms, and ensuring a smooth patient experience from intake through post-operative care.
Escort patients to exam and procedure rooms; assist with mobility as needed Collect patient history, perform intake, take vital signs, and complete screenings per provider guidelines Complete pre-operative intake, explain procedures, and address patient questions within scope Prepare surgical rooms, instruments, and sterile trays for Mohs procedures Assist the physician during procedures (passing instruments, suturing support, blotting, etc.) Administer local anesthesia and support hemostasis using cautery (per provider direction) Cleanse, disinfect, and drape surgical sites using proper sterile technique Apply bandages and review post-operative wound care instructions with patients Remove sutures and assist with follow-up care Collect, label, and process pathology specimens; maintain accurate pathology logs Route specimens to appropriate labs based on insurance requirements Document all patient interactions and procedures accurately in EMR Notify patients of lab and pathology results as directed Maintain exam room cleanliness, sterilize instruments (autoclave), and restock supplies Ensure compliance with HIPAA and infection control protocols Support overall clinic flow and assist with additional duties as needed
Qualifications & Experience: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) preferred At least 1 year of recent experience as a Medical Assistant, Surgical Assistant, or in a clinical patient care setting (dermatology or surgical experience preferred) Experience assisting with surgeries and/or procedures such as biopsies, excisions, Mohs surgery, or similar (required) Completion of a Medical Assistant, CNA, Surgical Tech, or Bachelor’s degree in a pre-med/pre-PA track preferred Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask effectively Excellent communication skills with providers, patients, and team members Professional, patient-focused approach with strong customer service skills Knowledge of HIPAA and infection control standards Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods of time during procedures Ability to lift and move at least 15 pounds Frequent bending, reaching, and use of hands during patient care and surgical support Ability to safely assist patients with mobility as needed Licensure/Certifications/Education Benefits (Full-Time; 30+ Hours per Week): Medical, dental, and vision coverage beginning the first of the month after hire Short-term and long-term disability, voluntary life insurance (employee, spouse, and dependent), critical illness, and hospital indemnity plans available after hire Employer-paid basic life and AD&D insurance Paid time off and company-recognized holidays Retirement savings plan options Discounts on cosmetic treatments and skincare products
Requires at least one year of clinical experience with specific expertise in assisting with biopsies, excisions, or Mohs surgery. CMA or RMA certification and a relevant degree or certificate are preferred.
