About the role

GiaCare Inc. is currently accepting applications from experienced civilian Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRTs) to work alongside the federal government in support of Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

About the Opportunity

Join a multidisciplinary healthcare team providing respiratory care to military service members, their families, retirees, and other eligible beneficiaries. As a PRN Registered Respiratory Therapist, you will provide hands-on inpatient and critical-care respiratory services, including airway management, mechanical ventilation, oxygen therapy, cardiopulmonary assessment, blood gas analysis, and emergency response.

Respiratory Therapy operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and federal holidays. PRN team members will work flexible 8- to 12-hour shifts based on departmental staffing and mission requirements. Work schedules are generally provided approximately five weeks in advance.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and monitor complex respiratory therapy equipment.
  • Assess patients’ cardiopulmonary conditions through physical examination, respiratory monitoring, and diagnostic testing.
  • Initiate, monitor, and adjust oxygenation and ventilation therapies.
  • Manage artificial airways and patients receiving mechanical ventilation.
  • Independently adjust ventilator settings based on patient assessments and blood gas results.
  • Administer respiratory medications and other prescribed therapeutic modalities.
  • Draw arterial, venous, and mixed venous blood samples.
  • Perform and interpret arterial blood gas analysis, pulse oximetry, end-tidal carbon dioxide monitoring, spirometry, and other respiratory diagnostic procedures.
  • Perform airway and tube care for intensive-care patients.
  • Monitor and interpret pulmonary artery pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, mixed venous oxygen content, and cardiac output.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of respiratory therapies and recommend appropriate changes to physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate as a member of the emergency response and crash team.
  • Insert and manage artificial airways during emergency situations.
  • Calibrate respiratory equipment and identify or correct mechanical malfunctions.
  • Provide respiratory care appropriate to patients across the lifespan, including infants, children, adolescents, and adults.
  • Educate patients and family members regarding respiratory treatments, equipment, and appropriate self-care.
  • Provide in-service training to respiratory therapists, nursing personnel, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and complete medical charting within required timelines.
  • Follow all established standards of care, hospital policies, procedures, safety requirements, and Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Participate in orientation, competency verification, quality-improvement activities, medical-readiness initiatives, and departmental meetings as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a two-year course of study leading to an Associate Degree from a respiratory therapy education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
  • Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Minimum of one year of specialized experience as a Certified Respiratory Therapist.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in any U.S. state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or willing to obtain).
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (or willing to obtain).
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (or willing to obtain).
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Compensation
  • $48.68 per hour
  • $2.81 per hour PTO stipend
  • $2.06 per hour holiday stipend
  • $2.00 per hour night-shift differential
  • $1.00 per hour weekend differential

Requirements

Requires an Associate Degree in respiratory therapy and a current RRT credential from the NBRC. Candidates must have at least one year of experience as a Certified Respiratory Therapist and hold various life support certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP).
