Position: Peer Specialist – MHAW Recovery Center East

Salary

$18.00 per hour, nonexempt position

Hours: Per Diem – Up to 15 hours per week; Flexibility to work evenings and weekends

Location: Riverhead, NY

Start Date: Immediately

Position Description

The MHAW Peer Support Line and Recovery Center East (RCE) provide recovery-oriented, non-clinical peer services grounded in mutuality, shared lived experience, and trauma-informed support. This position is designed for an individual who identifies as being in recovery and is committed to using their lived experience to support others on their recovery journey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site coverage during scheduled
  • Mondays: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
  • Wednesdays: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
  • Fridays: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
  • One (1) monthly team supervision (1 hour)
  • One (1) weekly supervision with direct report
  • Provide mutual peer support through the MHAW Peer Support Line by answering calls, providing active listening, offering encouragement, and supporting individuals in identifying their own recovery goals and strengths.
  • Provide follow-up calls, return voicemails, and maintain communication with individuals seeking peer support.
  • Provide individualized peer support and engagement to participants connected to Recovery Center East.
  • Build trusting, strength-based relationships with individuals by meeting them where they are and supporting self-directed recovery.
  • Assist participants in identifying resources, natural supports, community connections, and opportunities that promote wellness and recovery.
  • Facilitate and/or co-facilitate peer support groups, workshops, activities, and community-based events.
  • Assist with Recovery Center East programming, including participant engagement, outreach activities, and creating a welcoming recovery environment.
  • Support outreach efforts to increase awareness and utilization of Peer Support Line and Recovery Center East services.
  • Collaborate with the peer team and agency staff to support program goals and initiatives.
  • Respond to emails, communications, and program-related requests in a timely manner.
  • Attend supervision, team meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

Candidates should possess

  • Progress toward or maintenance of New York Certified Peer Specialist-Provisional (NYCPS-P) certification
  • A strong understanding of trauma-informed peer support principles
  • A commitment to ongoing personal and professional growth
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Basic computer, reading, and writing skills
  • Valid and clean NYS Driver’s License

Requirements

Candidates must have lived experience in recovery and be progressing toward or maintain New York Certified Peer Specialist-Provisional (NYCPS-P) certification. A valid NYS Driver's License and a strong understanding of trauma-informed principles are required.
