About the role

The Vascular Surgeon will provide comprehensive surgical care, including diagnosis, surgical intervention, and post-operative management for Veteran patients. They are also responsible for maintaining accurate clinical documentation and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality patient outcomes.

Akicita Federal is hiring a Vascular Surgeon to deliver high-quality, full-scope vascular surgical care to Veterans served by the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA. This is an on-site, direct patient care role where you will function as the primary vascular surgery provider, upholding standards consistent with those of a state-of-the-art civilian surgical program. Provide comprehensive vascular surgery services including evaluation, diagnosis, surgical intervention, and post-operative management for Veteran patients

Perform standard daytime clinical shifts (8.5-hour shifts, Monday through Friday) as well as weeknight and weekend call coverage as scheduled

Respond to call-back requests when directed to return to the facility to provide urgent or emergent vascular patient care

Conduct pre-operative assessments and develop individualized surgical treatment plans aligned with current American College of Surgeons vascular surgery guidelines

Collaborate with interdisciplinary care teams—including nursing, anesthesiology, and internal medicine—to coordinate seamless patient care across the surgical episode

Document all clinical encounters, operative notes, and patient progress accurately and in compliance with VA medical records standards

Participate in credentialing and onboarding processes prior to the start of clinical duties to ensure timely availability for scheduled shifts \n

  • Board certification in Vascular Surgery (required — candidates must be board certified, not board eligible)
  • Active, unrestricted medical license appropriate for practice in Pennsylvania (or eligibility to obtain prior to start)
  • Ability to obtain VA credentials and privileges at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center before commencing clinical work
  • Willingness and availability to cover daytime clinical shifts, weeknight call (4:30 PM–8:00 AM), and weekend call (Friday 4:30 PM–Monday 8:00 AM) as assigned
  • Ability to perform on-site services exclusively at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center, 1111 East End Blvd., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18711 \n What sets candidates apart:
  • Prior experience providing surgical care within a VA, military, or federal healthcare system
  • Familiarity with VA credentialing, privileging, and medical documentation workflows
  • Experience managing a broad, complex vascular surgery caseload independently, including emergent and after-hours cases
  • Demonstrated track record of practicing in alignment with American College of Surgeons vascular surgery standards and guidelines
  • Comfort operating within an interdisciplinary academic or teaching medical center environment
