Epilepsy is a neurological condition involving the brain that makes people more susceptible to having recurrent, unprovoked seizures.

Akron General’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) is a ten-bed monitoring unit allowing epilepsy specialists to diagnose a seizure problem accurately and design the best possible treatment plan.

As an LPN, you will assist fellow caregivers in providing exceptional, top-quality care to a diverse patient population.

In this role, you can make a lasting difference in the lives of patients, all while enhancing your nursing skills through hands-on experience and numerous educational resources offered within the Cleveland Clinic system.

A caregiver in this position works days from 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. with every other weekend and holiday rotation requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will: Collect, document and report patient data and observations to the RN or authorized directing health care provider.

Implement care plans as directed by an RN and contribute to care plan revisions.

Administer medications and/or treatments authorized by a provider and observe patients for adverse reactions.

Perform routine laboratory tests.

Educate patients and family members.

Participate in the departmental orientation of new employees in a positive manner, share knowledge, experiences, and provide guidance when assigned.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Graduate of an accredited Practical or Vocational Nursing Program Current Ohio licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) Or the American Red Cross Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: One year of patient care experience Epilepsy Monitoring Unit experience Critical care experience Physical Requirements: Requires frequent walking from department to department; requires sitting at a workstation or desk; requires standing; work may include occasional pushing and/or pulling, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs., such as files, documents and computer printouts.

Work requires finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination to operate a computer keyboard at a moderate skill level.

Mental Demands: Ability to work at a fast pace and prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with department directors, physicians and other members of the healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem-solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self-control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.

Special Demands: Needs minimal sustained direction in assessing needs, directing staff and carrying out departmental and professional responsibilities.

Self-starting and self-motivating; working hours may exceed eight (8) hours per day and is based on what is needed to accomplish work at hand.

Personal Protective Equipment: Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required..

Requirements

Candidates must be graduates of an accredited Practical or Vocational Nursing Program and hold a current Ohio LPN license. A Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required, and prior experience in an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit or critical care setting is preferred.
