New York State Psychiatry Institute·New York
The Assistant Research Scientist will conduct neurobehavioral research using molecular genetic manipulations and in vivo physiological techniques. Responsibilities include rodent handling, stereotaxic surgery, behavioral testing, and data analysis to model mechanisms of mental illness.
The work focuses on neurobehavioral systems, using molecular genetic manipulations to probe neural cellular and circuit function and, ultimately, behavior depending on demands of a given experiment, research responsibilities will include varying combinations of the following: Handling of research rodents, stereotaxic surgery and monitoring during recovery, behavioral testing, in vivo fiber photometry and electrophysiology, anatomic circuit tracing, neurohistology, microscopy, and data analysis. Experience with procedures and analysis of data utilizing genetically encoded biosensors and in vivo physiology is critical. Experience with vivo viral-mediated gene transfer and opto and chemo genetics is preferred. Familiarity with programming in Matlab and Python are important.
The candidate should be able to work on a flexible schedule, including some weekends and evenings.
Bachelor's degree and (1) year of professional research experience in an appropriate field, or 30 graduate credit hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience
Applicants will be expected to also have excellent organizational skills, keep detailed records, and aid others in the laboratory with data.
Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree with at least one year of professional research experience, or 30 graduate credit hours. Proficiency in data analysis and experience with in vivo physiology and genetically encoded biosensors are critical.
Market context
Assistant Research Scientist roles in New York are typically tied to active laboratory, clinical, or translational research programs, so demand often follows grant activity, hospital research needs, and academic lab staffing. Competition is usually strongest for candidates who can show hands-on research experience, compliance with Federal clinical testing requirements, and a degree aligned to chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science.
